TFJ TRAVEL JOURNALS: LONDON/WINDSOR/OXFORD

Before even seeing London, I always knew I would love it. This city not only lived up to my expectations, but exceeded them.

The best part for me was definitely spending time with much loved family who live there, but it wasn’t only that which confirmed my idea to move there some day.

London is a city filled with hundreds of years of history. Monuments can be found around the corner, and the atmosphere is indescribable. I found London to be a welcoming place, maybe because I was completely open to everything that it had to offer as well. In London, we saw the London Eye, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Covent Garden (which isn’t actually a garden) Shakespeare’s Globe, South Bank, The Shard, The Cheese-grater, London Bridge, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, and Oxford Street. I felt like I was playing real life Monopoly.

During our time we also saw two Shakespeare productions at the Globe Theatre. We watched one of my favourite plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as Macbeth. If you are interested in theatre or literature, or are just curious about The Globe, I definitely recommend going to see one of the productions, it was easily one of the highlights of our time in London.

We also went to Oxford and Windsor. Oxford was nothing like I expected, probably because I didn’t actually know anything about it other than it was home to one of the world’s most prestigious universities. As for Windsor, I got quite jealous when I saw how well the Queen lives. By luck, the flag on the castle was raised whilst we were there, which meant that Queen Lizzie was in the building.

For summertime, the weather in London wasn’t the best, it was always jacket weather, except for the one day that we were in Oxford, but regardless I think it added to the atmosphere of each place we went to. I definitely recommend London to anyone who enjoys the city lifestyle and wants a trip that they can fill with historical sightseeing, culture immersion, and shopping.

Have you guys been to London? What were your favourite places?

xx

Lust/Must Western Belts

I am actually in love with these belts. They literally the epitome of effortless cool and suave.

I was drawn to them when I bought a tank-dress and teamed it with my Topshop fringe leather jacket, and this image of a vintage black and silver leather belt popped into my head and it looked fab.

Unfortunately, the best one I’ve found is $129 and I can’t justify spending that much when I’m a student whose semester starts soon and is travelling in a few months, so I found this super similar dupe at Topshop for what should be about $44!

Ladies, jump on it

You can shop them in the links below!

If I lived in London…

It’s no secret that if I found a briefcase with at least $15,000, the first thing I would do is go to the airport with an empty suitcase and move to London.

It’s okay, I’m not being completely unrealistic, I have family there and accommodation can be organised so it’s not a stupid idea, I assure you.

Lately, the wanderlust has been real and every time I shop, a motto runs through my head: “This would look awesome in London”.

With that being said, my “If I lived in London” shopping wishlist continues to grow every time I open a new internet tab.

PS: Don’t try to tell me that these items of clothing aren’t as cool as I think they are. I won’t listen.

I also have devised a list of 10 legitimate reasons why I should go to London.

1. I miss my family who live there.

2. I like cold weather.

3. I can experiment with fashion with desirable results.

4. I speak English.

5. British Pound Sterling. Have you seen how low the cost of living is there compared to Australia? (let’s forget about the crap exchange rates) MAC lipsticks are £16 compared to $36 AUD.

5. There are endless paid internships available in the fashion industry (I know this because I follow @fashionworkie on Twitter)

6. I love Shakespeare.

7. I’m studying probably the most versatile degree ever, London offers plenty of courses that co-inside with my degree (I have also looked into this with great detail)

8. I like British bands

9. I’m happy with the monarchal government (and it’s future leaders)

10. I can do the best British accent ever.

PS: This is all hypothetical, Mum…

No longer are we the sans culottes

I know, I couldn’t help the french revolution reference to the Sans Culottes.

I’ve been seeing culottes around for a long time but for some reason the idea didn’t hit me until I was in Sportsgirl the other day and saw a pair. I didn’t have time to try them on, but I couldn’t stop thinking about them. Coincidentally, I then got a voucher for Sportsgirl, so maybe it’s a sign?

Either way I thought I should try and style them, and I came up with these two options, one for summer, one for winter. The colour of the culottes is so versatile and chic (maybe even more so than black) and I figure that, as they are a statement piece, they should be a colour other than black.

I think the best way to wear culottes is by teaming them with a fitted top, and if need be, an oversized, yet structured coat. I think that although culottes in themselves are a statement, but I think that you definitely need to accessorise, because it will pull the whole look together. The shape and location of the culottes need something to tie the whole look together and flatter your shape. Simple things like a crop top and a long necklace paired with culottes gives the outfit dimension, which I believe is needed with culottes.

I’ve also seen culottes worn with an oversized neoprene top, but I think that the structure of the top must compliment the culottes because without some sort of shape, I think it would look horrible. Culottes

Topshop Topman Student Lates

Don’t ask why it’s called “Student Lates”, because I’m not entirely sure… However I did have a good time at this Topshop event in Melbourne’s Emporium Topshop Topman store. Seriously, who would say no to 20% off everything, free popcorn and free drinks? Not me!

I’ve had my eye on Topshop’s capes for a really long time, and I tried them on a while ago, but couldn’t justify spending $78 on something that reminded me of a blanket. Technically, I liked the idea of wearing something that seemed like a blanket, especially since I was going to be at university and thought that it would be cool to sit in a cold lecture theatre with something that resembled a blanket but was acceptable to actually wear out in public.

I also tried on a pair of their black Joni jeans and I actually liked them! Every pair of jeans I have, and will ever own from Topshop are Jamie’s and I swear by them, but I think these will be my next jean purchase, they’re so comfortable and they don’t feel like jeans at all!

In the end, however, I did decide to get the black and white cape, and I can’t wait until Melbourne delivers a nice, cold autumn day and I can wear it without looking like an idiot.

Au Naturale

Au Natural

I know, judging by the title you’d assume this was a makeup post… I would too but then once you look at the radiating effortlessness from this edit, you can understand why I called it “Au Naturale”

There’s nothing I’m loving more at the moment than completely neutral, block coloured outfits with detailed accessories. This set is one of my ideal outfits to wear both casually during the day, or more dressed up at night, only needing to change your hairstyle!

Uni Chic

So tomorrow I have my first day of university orientation, or as everyone except me seems to call it “O-Week”. I’m not going to lie, I’m a little nervous, but then every time I think I’m nervous I remember that I don’t actually have any classes, and just have a “welcome lecture” and then I’m finished by 11am…

One thing that has been on my mind since I got into university is that I need to buy things specifically for uni, such as basic tops, another pair of jeans/pants, and maybe another jacket or two, not to mention a pair of black converse and flat boots…

So far, out of that whole list I have purchased a black Agent Ninteynine tote bag from General Pants, and a Marc by Marc Jacobs cosmetics case… I obviously needed a plain tote bag for school considering i’ll need a bag that’s big enough to carry books, my laptop and an iPad, while also versatile enough to use every day with any outfit. The cosmetics case on the other hand was an impulse buy after deciding that I needed a case to carry essentials in the event that I needed to touch up after a long day or if I was in a rush and didn’t get a chance to put on/finish my makeup routine. I work at David Jones for Mimco and therefore am located in the contemporary handbags department, and various Marc by Marc Jacobs items were on the counter and after a long shift, I couldn’t help myself!

In the edit above I have tried to be a little creative with potential outfits that I can wear to uni; who says that school attire has to be boringly casual? Did we learn nothing from NYFW street style?!

As one door closes, another one opens

I can finally say that I graduated high school!

What a journey it has been! There have been a lot of ups and i’ve had my fair share of downs, but I am more than ready to move on and start a new chapter of my life.

Looking back, I am quite proud of the person that i’ve grown into since 2009. Since then I learnt how to straighten my hair (thank every higher being), I no longer wear Dunlop Volleys (I re-purchased them one too many times) and I finally got around to throwing out my Noexss tracksuit pants that I bought when I was 11. Now aesthetically, these are all great achievements, but I’ve also managed to become the person that I want to be. Yes, this person is flawed, I know it, but I’ve been able to recognise my flaws and therefore work on them. I can’t guarantee that I won’t sleep in on Sundays or that I’m not going to pretend to text someone while i’m in an awkward situation, but I can try!

This year has been an insane emotional roller coaster, and I can honestly say that the bad has outweighed the good, but at times the good did succumb the sad realities of the bad. All of that aside, the pressures of VCE are extremely high, and at times I forget why and think “this is ridiculous”. The way I see it is that if you really are determined to have a certain career, you can do it what ever the circumstances, because if it’s a dream and something that you’re passionate about, you’ll have the motivation to achieve it, no matter what. Yes, exams are very important, and you have endured 13 years of school, so why give up when you only have a few weeks left? No one knows what will happen in 3 months time, so what happens if you stopped trying and in a few months decide to do something that requires an ATAR score, and then can’t do it because at the time you couldn’t be bothered? This is something that runs through my head every.single.day and i’m getting frustrated because i’ve become numb to all feelings about exams. The good thing about that is that i’m not stressed, the bad thing is that the importance of  these exams hasn’t hit me yet and my first exam is in 7 days from today…

On a different note, though; I graduated, and I couldn’t be more proud knowing that even through the toughest of times, I’ve made it. Regardless of the struggles, I persevered through and finished school. Another (small) benefit of graduating was that I needed to get a new outfit… It was a formal occasion, graduation gowns and everything. It was held in Melbourne’s Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, and the location itself was quite architecturally beautiful. There was a mass followed by a ceremony and although it was very long, at most times, it was engaging and felt very surreal – I still remember walking into my prep class for the first time!

As crazy as it sounds, I felt more stressed trying to find a last minute outfit for graduation than I do preparing for exams! I was quite set on getting a white skirt because I really wanted something to contrast the black compulsory gown. Here’s what I ended up with, wearing:

Top: Topshop

Skirt: Bardot

Shoes: Windsor Smith

Clutch: Equip

Lipstick: Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet, in 37 L’exubérante

Necklace: Tiffany & Co.

Watch: Vintage Seiko

Bracelet: Tiffany & Co.

Must have: Mesh tops

Mesh and gold

Not only are mesh tops so so so chic, but they’re so easy to wear!

Regardless of your style, whether you prefer boho chic, casual or sports-luxe, mesh is easily adaptable to suit every occasion for every style.

In the edit above, i’ve gone for the Parisian chic type of look that has been sported a lot recently during Paris Fashion Week.

Personally, I love mesh and I can see mesh pieces becoming classic items which can be worn for quite some time, almost as versatile as the LBD!

Melbourne Spring Fashion Week!

Wednesday September 3rd was one of the most stressful night of my life!

Picture this: A stress-prone fashion blogger/budding high fashion magazine editor sitting front row at a designer runway.

Kind of like what you see in movies and on The Rachel Zoe Project, right?

Well I wish I could say that things went that smoothly.

There I was, sitting in my cute little Volkswagen Beetle, with my knees tucked under my chin while wearing my (very high) Windsor Smith ‘Powwer’ heels, draped in this gorgeous printed kimono from Mink Pink, while tugging at my leather top from Mossman, and trying not to make the rips in my Topshop ripped jeans any bigger than they should be. It was 6:00pm and the MSFW Designer Runway 2 was going to start at 6:30. We thought that surely, parking would be easy to find… It wasn’t.

My poor mother and I drove around for one hour trying to find parking! By the time we parked and walked down to Melbourne Town Hall, Designer Runway 2 has approximately 7 minutes until it was over.

Stressed, depressed (but well dressed) and absolutely desperate to see the show, we went to the box office, explained our situation and asked if it would be possible to see the 8:00pm show. After being told that we needed to purchase new tickets, my mum and I turned and left the box office in defeat. Then, we hear the words “guys, hold on”

After the emotional roller coaster that was missing the first show, stressing to find parking, and not being able to get tickets for the 8pm show, a wave of relief rushed over us thanks to this one incredibly kind woman. As we turn around, the MSFW volunteer comes over to us with two tickets to the 8pm show, free of charge. “Take these and enjoy the show” she said. In shock, I replied “are you serious?!”

So, from then, what I liked to call my night begun, and I got to see the amazing work of Manning Cartell, LIFEwithBIRD, Khalo, Carly Hunter, Alice Mccall, Lui Hon, YB J’AMIE, Neo Dia, and finally, Willow.

Although every collection was great, I did have my favourites, which were Lui Hon, Neo Dia, Manning Cartel and Khalo. (pictured above)

I must admit though that although I loved majority of the collections, there were some pieces that didn’t appeal to me. For example, Carly Hunter’s collection which consisted of a lot of draping and 80’s prom dress silk/satin puffy tops didn’t excite me.

Another thing that I didn’t particularly like was that a lot of the collections used Birkinstock styled shoes from MSFW official partner, Windsor Smith (Slip and Cara sandals) which, for someone who absolutely loathes that type of sandal, really pulled my attention away from the pieces which I was meant to be focusing on.

Windsor Smith, however, did have other pairs of gorgeous shoes on display, specifically their 60’s inspired ‘Largo’ shoe which I have fallen for!

Looking back, I am so grateful that I got to be apart of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, and I know that Designer Runway 2 was only the first of many fashion shows that I will go to see, and hopefully this time next year I can be writing to you from London, Milan, Paris, or New York!

I would also like to say a big thank you to that MSFW volunteer – I don’t know who you are but I’m sending every positive vibe your way!

Stay tuned: Next week I will be posting videos from MSFW Designer Runway 2 on YouTube!
