It’s no secret that if I found a briefcase with at least $15,000, the first thing I would do is go to the airport with an empty suitcase and move to London.
It’s okay, I’m not being completely unrealistic, I have family there and accommodation can be organised so it’s not a stupid idea, I assure you.
Lately, the wanderlust has been real and every time I shop, a motto runs through my head: “This would look awesome in London”.
With that being said, my “If I lived in London” shopping wishlist continues to grow every time I open a new internet tab.
PS: Don’t try to tell me that these items of clothing aren’t as cool as I think they are. I won’t listen.
I also have devised a list of 10 legitimate reasons why I should go to London.
1. I miss my family who live there.
2. I like cold weather.
3. I can experiment with fashion with desirable results.
4. I speak English.
5. British Pound Sterling. Have you seen how low the cost of living is there compared to Australia? (let’s forget about the crap exchange rates) MAC lipsticks are £16 compared to $36 AUD.
5. There are endless paid internships available in the fashion industry (I know this because I follow @fashionworkie on Twitter)
6. I love Shakespeare.
7. I’m studying probably the most versatile degree ever, London offers plenty of courses that co-inside with my degree (I have also looked into this with great detail)
8. I like British bands
9. I’m happy with the monarchal government (and it’s future leaders)
10. I can do the best British accent ever.
PS: This is all hypothetical, Mum…
1. The over-part: Here we’re taking inspiration from the comb over, but this is much, much cooler. The trick is to part your hair on the opposite side to it’s natural part, therefore giving it a natural lift. Then, when I do this style I tease the fringe part so it has volume and doesn’t just fall lifeless in front of my face. Some people may need to get the hair dryer out and tease it with heat, otherwise the hair will fall back into it’s natural place.
You will need:
– Rats tail comb
– Strong hold hair spray
– Hair dryer
2. The half up top knot: I use this style when I’m running low on time and can’t straighten my hair properly, so I separate the top from the bottom, put the top in a knot, then straighten the bottom. It saves time and looks really boho-chic.
You will need:
– A hair tie
– Hair pins
3. The low-bun: Tying your hair up when your hair is short can be a nightmare, especially when you’re used to tying longer hair in a high pony or a trusty top knot. This low-bun not only is much easier, but also looks really elegant, but is adaptable to any style. I wore my hair like this with a simple crop top and a high waisted midi skirt, which looked really sophisticated, but then I’ve also done my hair like this when I wore a camel coloured turtle-neck knit and jeans, which was really casual and comfortable, which was a nice contrast to my hair.
You will need:
– A thin hair tie
– Hair pins (lots of them)
– Rats tail comb
– A really good contour
4. The wavy middle part: I personally have a lot of difficulty getting my hair to look wavy; it’s either straight or curly. But I think this look can be pulled off with a bit more effort than the other styles.
You will need:
– Rats tail comb (to part your hair down the middle)
– Hair spray
– Hair straightener (or curler without the clamp)
These looks are super easy to replicate and can easily give extra personality to even the simplest outfit.
I seriously cannot believe it! Almost two years and in such a short time we’ve come so far!
I know, 2,000 may not seem like a lot, but to someone who didn’t even think that anyone would see this blog, it’s a lot. Not to mention the fact that all I’ve ever wanted was to be able to influence people; to have a platform where I could be completely honest and opinionated, and people would listen. Now I have 2,000 people listening and I’m starting to think that I’m doing something right.
One thing’s for sure though, and it’s that The Fashion Journals has been a pretty solo ride. Everything that you see i’ve put together in hopes that it’s what people want to see, but I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to not only work for myself, but for you. At the end of the day, I can read and re-read the content that I put up but that won’t mean a thing if I’m the only person gaining from this. I want this blog to benefit every reader in the same way that writing it benefits me. I’ve found myself in a world where anything is possible, where the most unlikely of people can create something that can grow to be influential. Let’s be real, for anyone who knew me, you would never have thought that I of all people would be writing a fashion blog, yet here I am, and I’m loving every minute of it. To tell you the truth, since starting TFJ my mind has never stopped working, and it’s exhausting, but I’m so passionate about this that I don’t care, doing this gives me a reason to strive for things, to work hard so that one day I can dedicate myself solely to The Fashion Journals.
In order to do this, I want to encourage you to connect as much as possible. I want to write this for you, so I need you to tell me what you want to see. Is there a piece of clothing that you have an have no idea to style it? Is there an event you want me to cover? Curious about a beauty product? Just ask!
So, finally, I want to thank everyone for your support, without each and every one of you, I probably wouldn’t be so focused on building TFJ to be all that it can be. This site wouldn’t have the life and atmosphere that it does if it weren’t for you, so thank you.
It’s been quite a while now that i’ve been keeping a close eye on KJ’s style, but there’s something about the cliché blue lob and over lined lips that has stopped me from sharing my observations. I think I was just worried that I would seem like another basic trend follower, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t care because… why should I?
Kylie can literally go from elegant and sassy to Coachella ready in 0.00 seconds and no matter what style she tries, she pulls it off. Not only are her outfits on point all the time, but so is her makeup and hair. It’s literally like she doesn’t put a foot wrong, which reminds me, Kylie could (and does) wear plain jeans and a singlet top, and always has the most incredible shoes which make the whole outfit. Here’s what I mean:
I think what I like most about Kylie’s style is that it reminds me that anyone with any means can look chic without breaking the budget. Say you invest in good, gorgeous pairs of shoes in neutral colours, you can easily add an air of effortless style to an otherwise plain outfit. Finish the look with unique jewellery and you’ve got yourself a super easy, super chic look with minimal effort!
It’s a known fact that a good base provides the foundation for a good makeup day (no pun intended) and sometimes having a good base requires a lot of time and effort to ensure that coverage is smooth and flattering.
It’s no secret that my skin isn’t the easiest surface to cover, not only do I have way too many acne scars, but because of the stress i’ve been under this year, I also have my fair share of unwelcome blemishes. So, along with the redness and the new oil that has developed in my T-Zone (which never existed until 3 months ago) I have had many difficulties finding a decently priced foundation and concealer that would actually work.
For a few months I was using the Rimmel London ‘Wake Me Up‘ foundation and concealer, and although it was a great product, lately I felt that “good enough” just wasn’t good enough. Once that ran out I switched to the Rimmel London Lasting Finish 25 Hour Foundation, which is really good, the coverage is great and the consistency is comfortable but also reliable. A few days after purchasing this, however, I was given the Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin foundation and concealer. Since hearing about it’s release, I was very interested in trying it, but never got around to buying it, so when the opportunity to review the product came about, I jumped at it straight away!
Firstly, once I got past the excitement of receiving these products, I unwrapped the package as if I were a five year old and was unwrapping the biggest christmas present ever. Looking at the two bottles filled me up with pride – I was finally seeing physical results of blogging! (or as I like to call them – “Blogger Perks”)
Then, once the excitement subsided and I showed the unopened products to everyone on my Snapchat list, I ventured off to try the products!
The foundation at first seemed like it had a very thin consistency, which worried me because I thought “great, imagine how quickly i’m going to get through this!” because one pump didn’t seem enough to cover my face. Before adding a second pump, I thought I should see how much product comes out with one pump. It was actually the perfect amount! Then the second thing that crossed my mind was “Okay, so if the consistency is so thin, but the amount was good, should I use a second pump to make sure that I have a good coverage?”. The answer was no! The SuperStay Better Skin foundation gave me an even coverage that hid a lot of my scars… and this was without concealer!
Then I added the concealer on top of my scars and blemishes (mostly on my cheeks) and found that the scars disappeared and the redness no longer existed! It seemed almost too good to be true! Then I thought “okay so if it’s covering this well, I don’t think it will last in the heat this coming summer” especially considering how thin the consistency really was. Lucky for me, Melbourne weather pulled through to give me a beautiful 29 degree day, perfect product testing weather!
Here is just some background info about the SuperStay Better Skin products:
Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin is Maybelline’s first vitamin enriched long wear foundation with skin improving Actyl-C. It provides all-day coverage and even has SPF 14!
So to break that down, it’s a bottle full of facial goodness that not only covers imperfections, but helps to improve them, while protecting your skin from the harsh UV rays that you may encounter!
May I just say that after almost 5 days of using the SuperStay Better Skin products, I am not disappointed! For the price, this product is fantastic! The only (somewhat) negative comment I can make about this product is that sometimes I accidentally dispense too much concealer just from holding the bottle, so honestly, if packaging is the only concern, I wouldn’t worry at all about the abilities of this product.
I am happy to say that I’ve found a economically priced foundation and concealer duo that actually works for me, and provides my skin with the coverage it needs! I can only imagine how great this product would be for people who don’t have as many skin problems as I do.
This product also claims to give you “better looking skin in 3 weeks” – Although i’ve only had it for almost a week, I can see that it actually does help my skin. The oil that I complained about earlier doesn’t build up when i’m wearing it, and i’ve noticed that it hasn’t aggravated my skin like a lot of other products do. I’ve also noticed that I can use this product without primer and the coverage lasts all day!
… To think I was going to spend $59 on a NARS foundation!
I will do a product update in 3 weeks to confirm whether the Maybelline SuperStay Better Skin foundation and concealer really does give you better skin… I have very high hopes!
For now though, I do recommend this product to everyone who is in need of a great foundation for a great price!
So I must admit, most of these products I have had before July/August but I have become absolutely hung up on these products, and have or will use them excessively, and recommend you do the same!
Let’s start with the basics which should become of your skin care regiment (if they aren’t already). I absolutely love the Formula 10.0.6 skin care range, and I use So Totally Clean Deep Pore Cleanser which is a 2-in-1 cleanser and toner, which doesn’t require any water. All you do is use makeup remover pads, a few drops and voila! Of course, I only use this when I feel very lazy or don’t have time to wash my face properly, but this definitely does the trick. It cleanses well and leaves my skin feeling clean and smooth.
Also from Formula 10.0.6, I use the Best Face Forward Daily Foaming Cleanser which uses passionfruit and green tea to keep my skin clean and oil free, while the green tea exfoliates!
But, I don’t just use these products alone. For Christmas in 2012, my mum bought me the Models Prefer Skin Cleanser, which is almost exactly like a Clarisonic Cleansing System, but is a quarter of the price! This system comes with four attachments: A soft bristled brush, a normal brush, a sponge applicator, and massage fingers. I found that the normal brush is too harsh on my skin, as I have very sensitive skin, but after cleansing with it, I feel like I have also taken away a layer of skin, which is actually a good thing. Normally though, I use the soft bristled brush because I don’t wear that much makeup (normally just foundation and concealer). The sponge applicator is good for moisturiser, but I don’t use it often because I noticed that it doesn’t apply the moisturiser in a way that makes it blend into my skin, but rather leaves a thin layer in certain areas which I then need to massage in by hand. As for the massage fingers, I find them a bit awkward to use, but they do feel relaxing! When my jaw feels tense from clenching (which I do often), I use the massage fingers to hover over the sore area (externally) and find that it does release tension, but unless you open your mouth and separate your teeth, you might feel a very discomforting vibration through your teeth! The system is battery powered, which is fine by me because the batteries last for a very long time! If you are considering purchasing a Clarisonic (which can range from $100-$250), I suggest you try the Models Prefer which you can purchase at Priceline or Target for $15, which basically does the exact same job, and even comes with more attachments with no extra cost!
Now, moving on to makeup tools!
One of my gorgeous friends bought me Real Techniques Core Collection Cosmetic Brushes, which automatically makes her my makeup guardian angel, because since then, my foundation, concealer and lipstick has been flawless***
The Detailer Brush is so perfect for applying lipstick without a liner or perfecting lip arches, but also for concealing problem areas with precision!
The Pointed Foundation Brush is my best friend. It literally applies any liquid foundation evenly and the point is perfectly angled to reach all areas of the face and neck!
Finally, I use the Buffing Brush solely for powder foundation, which I use to blend around my jaw line, chin and neck to ensure that my coverage is even and that I have no foundation lines!
What I noticed, however, is that sometimes I would be in a rush and would be unable to spend 10 or so minutes applying concealer and foundation with the brushes and taking all the precautions to make sure that everything was blended in properly, so, intrigued by the colour and desperate to buy a product from Mecca Maxima, I purchased the Kit Cosmetics Blender Sphere which has once again revolutionised my makeup routine, and I cannot urge you enough to join in on it’s impeccable and immaculate makeup blending powers!
The Kit Cosmetics Blender Sphere is the highly economic price of $14.99 and is literally one of the best cosmetic tools I have bought! The Blender Sphere speeds up the process of applying makeup while providing unblemished and accurate coverage. The sphere shape means that the slightly pointed ends can be used to reach smaller areas or places that require more detailed blending, while the middle of the sponge can be used to blend in the larger areas of the face.
Honestly, the Blender Sphere is a tool that I can’t imagine not using, and works so perfectly hand-in-hand with the Real Techniques cosmetic brushes!
This month, being August and 4 months away from the opening of Sephora in Sydney, Australia, I have decided that I will continue to use the best mascara I have ever purchased.
It was the Sephora Collection Full Action Extreme Effect Mascara in Ultra Black. This mascara is perfect. I am not even exaggerating. It lengthens, volumises, perfectly separates (I hate clumped eyelashes!), and curves your lashes without the need of an eyelash curler! Not only is the quality amazing, but it does wonders for your lashes! Before this mascara, I would apply an annoying amount of mascara repetitively to my lashes, which not only damaged them, but felt uncomfortable! With the Sephora Collection mascara, I found that I only need one or two layers before my lashes look great! What’s even better? It’s affordable!
It seems as though the Sephora Collection eye makeup products dominate above the other brands which Sephora sells, because I also love the Sephora Collection Long-lasting Eyeliner in 01 Noir Black. The precision I get with this liquid eyeliner is incredible! Before this eyeliner, I barely even bothered with liner because I already knew that it would take a miracle before I could perfect my liner, but with this product, I have been able to master the art of eyeliner multiple times thanks to the high precision ultra-fine bristle brush.
After all of that eye makeup, you’re going to need a good, gentle product that can remove the liner and mascara without tearing out lashes, creating ‘panda eyes’, or your average cleanser where you risk going red-eyed from accidentally opening your eyes to make sure you’ve removed everything before rinsing!
I use the Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover. I was given this product as a sample when I purchased the mascara and liner, and I wish I purchased a bottle bigger than 25ml! All you do is apply a few drops of the serum to a makeup remover pad and gently wipe your eyes. The serum not only removes makeup, but strengthens the lashes with it’s lash strengthening complex, which is perfect for people who wear contacts and others with sensitive eyes! The product is literally for everyone so try it!
Lip balm seems like an easy product to buy, but a quality balm is hard to come across! A few years ago I was on a very strong medication for my skin, where dry lips were a major side effect. It was so harsh that laughing was painful, and giving people a polite smile was out of the question. Out of desperation I used Vaseline but it was so impractical, especially when I was in class, the last thing I wanted to do was pull out a jar of Vaseline. My troubles came to end end when I discovered Maybelline Baby Lips.
I’m not sure what it is, but Baby Lips has continued to be my favourite lip balm that I have ever tried. At the generous price of $3.95, Baby Lips moisturises your lips almost instantly. First, a few minutes after application, you begin to shed the dry skin (if there is any), which then leaves you with smooth and cushioned lips that taste really, really nice! I just finished my favourite Menthol flavoured balm, and today replaced it with the Mango Pie flavour, which I hadn’t tried before, but am really liking! Since trying Maybelline Baby Lips I don’t think I can use any other balm!
Last year I won a competition, and included in the package was a voucher for a makeover with Gorgeous Cosmetics in Melbourne Central, which I redeemed and discovered the incredible lipsticks! A little short on money, I could only purchase one item that the lovely makeup artist used on me, but I am so happy I decided on the lipstick! The colour is a deep, dark red called Shiraz (M29), which is the perfect winter colour!
Anyone who knows me, knows that I absolutely love my two Chanel lipsticks for their quality and vibrance, but I can honestly and justly compare the quality of Gorgeous Cosmetics to the quality of Chanel! The lipstick is long lasting and remains vibrant, and I love the canister that it’s in! Yes, the Chanel quality is slightly better (which you would expect) but Gorgeous Cosmetics lipsticks are very close in standard for a little over half the price of a Chanel lipstick!
Finally, my 13th favourite beauty product of July/August is…
My M.A.C Cosmetics Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in ‘More To Love‘ This hot pink liner of perfectness is exactly as described: Long wearing. What I love about this lip pencil is that the quality is so good that if I wanted to, I could wear it without lipstick by lining then filling in my lips. The colour is bold and makes a statement on it’s own! It also brings back memories, as I purchased it in Dubai Airport on the way home from Italy! The crayon texture makes it glide on accurately and smoothly, while staying on without smudging!
It’s the perfect mediator when you don’t feel like wearing lipstick, but want a beautifully vibrant colour on your lips!
So that’s it! Those are my favourite beauty products of July/August which are gracing my makeup bag for the month!
