Every time I think of an ideal outfit, one of the first things I think about is affordability. When I saw the top for $17AUD I almost did a double backflip (sort of… not really) but I was very shocked. Then, I went searching for an inexpensive skirt and found this one from Doublju and lost my mind when I noticed it had been on sale for $4.90 and was $15 full price!!!
Nothing beats a gorgeous outfit that makes you look a million dollars, but actually costs $124.20 in total!!!
I’m also really loving neutral colours and rose gold at the moment, so it’s really reassuring to see that you can achieve a certain look for a minimal amount!
Hi everyone, I am so so sorry for not posting in a very long time! It’s been such a busy, stressful time for me; between graduating from high school and studying for exams i’ve barely had time to breathe, let alone dedicate myself to The Fashion Journals!
I have tried, though! I have two articles (and a half) which are still in drafting, and many photos I need to post!
When it comes to writing, I try to provide you with the best quality of writing that I can possibly produce, and therefore am very fussy with what I post, hence why nothing has been published! I don’t like having quick, rushed posts and prefer to be committed to the piece before I show it to you all!
With that being said, during my (frequent) study breaks, I did make some edits and they will all be up soon, also, as from November 21st, I will be 100% focused on TFJ and will be doing everything possible to bring you guys great content!
Thanks for bearing with me, love you guys! x
Not only are mesh tops so so so chic, but they’re so easy to wear!
Regardless of your style, whether you prefer boho chic, casual or sports-luxe, mesh is easily adaptable to suit every occasion for every style.
In the edit above, i’ve gone for the Parisian chic type of look that has been sported a lot recently during Paris Fashion Week.
Personally, I love mesh and I can see mesh pieces becoming classic items which can be worn for quite some time, almost as versatile as the LBD!
(Bonus points if your LBD is mesh!)
The bedside table: Necessity central.
Everything you use daily is normally here. If you’re like me, my bedside table needs to be more practical than display-worthy, but I’ve tried to get the best of both worlds by making my essentials look somewhat presentable!
On my bedside table, I have:
The ‘I have one room to cram all of my things in’ shelf/shelves: This is literally as the title stated.
I am still living at home with my family, and therefore, I have one room that needs to act as a bedroom, study, bathroom, and lounge room. So every little trinket, perfume bottle, book, or basically anything that belongs to me needs to be stored here. This can make for a very cluttered space. Unlike some people, I cannot tolerate clutter… I can’t focus and I do not enjoy the time that I spend in that space, therefore, I need to be incredibly selective with everything that I have around; this makes things a lot harder, especially if you’re sentimental like I am! However, there is light at the end of the tunnel, and that light comes in the form of storage! I’ve used this 6 square bookshelf to store my favourite little ornaments, and have also converted it to a display, which comes in handy when I’m getting ready to go out. Here I also have a canvas made by my two best friend’s sister, Jessica C.(You can take a look at, and purchase her other work here), with Paris, London, and New York snow globes displayed in front of it, which I picked up from a cute little gift shop in Greensborough. The rest of the shelves either have photo frames or magazines!
The mini Oval Office: Where all official business is taken care of.
My desk is probably one of my favourite parts of my room. Everything that inspires me is staring right at me, motivating me to continue my homework, blog posts, uni and job applications!
Just a side note, I do not enjoy having dead flowers on my desk… I just don’t want to throw them out until I replace them! My little orchid plant has lasted ages and the flowers should bloom again soon! Plus, dead/dying roses are really morbidly metaphorical and honestly, I kind of find them beautiful.
I also have swarmed my desk with candles. why? you may ask: because it creates a really relaxing mood when I’m cramming last minute homework!
Included on my desk is…:
These parts are just some parts of my room, I haven’t even shown you guys the other side! I will be posting a “de-clutter” post soon where I will show a before and after shot of my bookshelf and the other half of my room that isn’t featured here!
All of these things that make up my room, pretty much sum me up too. I’m just a fashion loving, family orientated, friend treasuring person who really likes magazines and owns way too many books!
There is something about Kim Kardashian’s style lately that I absolutely love, and I think it’s the gorgeous silhouettes that the outfits accentuate. It’s the use of colour in the most elegant way. It’s the simplicity of the look, and the effortless sophistication that radiates from her when she’s wearing them.
I know, i’ve used such floral language to describe Kim Kardashian and her outfits, but take a look and you’ll understand what I mean.
This is the epitome of effortless style.
Plus, you can steal this style so easily! These outfits are composed of basics in very neutral colours. Midi skirts, body suits, ankle jeans button up shirts and cropped knits, finished with staple heels or sneakers e voilá!
I have, however, saved the best till last. This is my all time favourite look
After much style stalking, Kim is wearing
Wednesday September 3rd was one of the most stressful night of my life!
Picture this: A stress-prone fashion blogger/budding high fashion magazine editor sitting front row at a designer runway.
Kind of like what you see in movies and on The Rachel Zoe Project, right?
Well I wish I could say that things went that smoothly.
There I was, sitting in my cute little Volkswagen Beetle, with my knees tucked under my chin while wearing my (very high) Windsor Smith ‘Powwer’ heels, draped in this gorgeous printed kimono from Mink Pink, while tugging at my leather top from Mossman, and trying not to make the rips in my Topshop ripped jeans any bigger than they should be. It was 6:00pm and the MSFW Designer Runway 2 was going to start at 6:30. We thought that surely, parking would be easy to find… It wasn’t.
My poor mother and I drove around for one hour trying to find parking! By the time we parked and walked down to Melbourne Town Hall, Designer Runway 2 has approximately 7 minutes until it was over.
Stressed, depressed (but well dressed) and absolutely desperate to see the show, we went to the box office, explained our situation and asked if it would be possible to see the 8:00pm show. After being told that we needed to purchase new tickets, my mum and I turned and left the box office in defeat. Then, we hear the words “guys, hold on”
After the emotional roller coaster that was missing the first show, stressing to find parking, and not being able to get tickets for the 8pm show, a wave of relief rushed over us thanks to this one incredibly kind woman. As we turn around, the MSFW volunteer comes over to us with two tickets to the 8pm show, free of charge. “Take these and enjoy the show” she said. In shock, I replied “are you serious?!”
So, from then, what I liked to call my night begun, and I got to see the amazing work of Manning Cartell, LIFEwithBIRD, Khalo, Carly Hunter, Alice Mccall, Lui Hon, YB J’AMIE, Neo Dia, and finally, Willow.
Although every collection was great, I did have my favourites, which were Lui Hon, Neo Dia, Manning Cartel and Khalo. (pictured above)
I must admit though that although I loved majority of the collections, there were some pieces that didn’t appeal to me. For example, Carly Hunter’s collection which consisted of a lot of draping and 80’s prom dress silk/satin puffy tops didn’t excite me.
Another thing that I didn’t particularly like was that a lot of the collections used Birkinstock styled shoes from MSFW official partner, Windsor Smith (Slip and Cara sandals) which, for someone who absolutely loathes that type of sandal, really pulled my attention away from the pieces which I was meant to be focusing on.
Windsor Smith, however, did have other pairs of gorgeous shoes on display, specifically their 60’s inspired ‘Largo’ shoe which I have fallen for!
Looking back, I am so grateful that I got to be apart of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, and I know that Designer Runway 2 was only the first of many fashion shows that I will go to see, and hopefully this time next year I can be writing to you from London, Milan, Paris, or New York!
I would also like to say a big thank you to that MSFW volunteer – I don’t know who you are but I’m sending every positive vibe your way!
Stay tuned: Next week I will be posting videos from MSFW Designer Runway 2 on YouTube!
Sometimes, you just have to love having a mother who saves some of her best pieces.
My mum purchased this skirt from Paris well over 20 years ago, and I get this vintage Kenzo printed silk skirt vibe from it, but, in all honesty, I like this skirt better!
The top is a very comfortable, but stylish neoprene material with mesh inserts.
The shoes are Windsor Smith Dion Wedges, the choker is from Seventh Sun, and the silver cuff is from Sportsgirl!
I wore this to my friend’s 18th birthday party, and I absolutely love this fun yet chic parisienne look!
So I haven’t really dabbled in the area of contouring until recently, when I went into Mecca Maxima and enquired about blush, and the makeup artist transformed me into a swan using the Bobbi Brown Nectar Blush, NARS Albatross Highlighter and NARS Laguna Bronzer. In a matter of 3 minutes my complexion looked so great and the shape of my face was well defined and flattering!
Unfortunately, these three incredible products are quite costly, so, as per usual, an obsession took over and I had to find a cheaper alternative!
To do so, I ventured into Priceline and spoke to one of the employees, who gave me honest advice regarding the products. She said that a highlighter isn’t necessary, it’s just something to emphasise certain areas of the face, but since we never needed it before, why do we need it now?
So she showed me to the Rimmel London Natural Bronzer, which would compliment my tone, but also the Maybelline Fit Me Blush which I purchased beforehand (Princeline were having a massive cosmetic sale!) The two together are great! Granted, the effect isn’t as prominent as it was with the NARS and Bobbi Brown products, but for now it’s just as good, especially for someone still learning to contour properly! To apply the Bronzer, I use a Real Techniques Contour Brush and I am still looking for a decently priced, quality blush brush (the brush that came with the blush was very rough on the skin and didn’t apply the product properly)
Then, as previously stated in my June Beauty Wishlist, I was very interested in purchasing either a Bobbi Brown or Gorgeous Cosmetics Gel Eyeliner, but yet again, at the moment, spending over $20 on an eyeliner is unjustifiable. Instead, I found my solution in a Maybelline Gel Eyeliner, which is retailed at $16.95 AUD, but I purchased at $15 at Priceline.
I also wanted to try lining my waterline to accentuate my eyes and give the illusion that they are bigger, and so I purchased the Essence Kajal eye pencil in 04 white. At the inexpensive cost of $2.00, I was surprised by the quality and the easy, smooth application, especially for the price!
Finally, my favourite beauty tool that I have bought is the NARS pencil sharpener! My mum purchased a Manicare sharpener a few weeks before I purchased the NARS one, and I just wasn’t sold. The NARS sharpener is so perfect! I never thought I would love a pencil sharpener! It is a dual sharpener, so it can sharpen different sized pencils, and a cute little pick that you can use when you open up the little removable compartment that catches the shavings so you can clean the blades! I went crazy sharpening all of my cosmetic pencils and was so surprised at how with two turns, you get a fully sharpened pencil with no faults!
Also, because Mecca is so lovely, I was given a sample pot of the Too Faced Primer which is quite good, but I prefer my MAC Cosmetics Prep + Prime Primer.
These few little products have changed how I apply and think of makeup. It can do a lot more than conceal, and emphasise, but also shapes and contours, and it’s so easy to do!
Let me know in the comments section whether you would like to see a tutorial on contouring or know more about my updated makeup routine!
I know I haven’t posted in a long time, and i’m sorry! It’s been a very busy time for me with regard to school and family and every time I get a spare moment, I start writing but always get distracted with other things and so I have a whole heap of material drafted that I either haven’t finished or haven’t edited!
One of my goals, however, is to at least post once a week! and i’m going to finish of the articles i’ve begun, starting with this one!
Lately, I have become obsessed with chokers. There is something about their 90’s mystical vibe that has lured me in. I first joined the choker club with a delicate half moon choker from Seventh Sun which is really comfortable to wear and gives off a really relaxed, cool indie/hippy type of vibe. The quality is quite good from what I’ve noticed and really versatile to suit any style!
I’ve always had a ‘thing’ for crystals… crystal necklaces, rings, and even have a little crystal collection which I’ve had since I was 5. The beauty of the enigmatic stones, and their ‘powers’ make them the perfect, unique accessory, as each stone is different and significant in some way. They are a very personal accessory which, although style and cut can be replicated, the stone itself can’t.
When I was in Italy, I purchased this gorgeous crystal necklace from a little market store at the base of these beautiful (and somewhat claustrophobic) krast caves in Marche, Italy, called “Le Grotte Di Frassasi” (The Frassasi caves) This necklace has been my staple every day necklace since April last year and still, to this day, I have no clue what type of a crystal it is! My closest guess is an amber stone, but I can’t be sure!
On Wednesday I also received this gorgeous Rose Quartz necklace from thelunarlabel, which is just so easy to wear and just gives me a really positive energy! For the amazing price of $8 NZD (with free postage!) I will definitely be purchasing more, next time with my favourite crystal, the amethyst!
This is the cheapest, chicest, and most unique way of changing up your style and giving it a bit of a naturally beautiful twist!
Beyoncé and Jay have been hitting headlines with rumours about their relationship, following the “elevator incident” and then with some woman coming out saying that she was Jay’s lover, even releasing a music video called “Sorry Mrs Carter”, and yet, through all of it, Bey and Jay were performing on their On The Run Tour, a tour which probably couldn’t have been as successful or wouldn’t even exist if the couple were in such trouble as the media is making them out to be.
Maybe when Beyoncé and Jay Z stop making songs about and featuring each other, will I believe the rumours, and maybe when their on stage chemistry isn’t smokin‘ I might just accept the fact that their relationship is coming to an end, but until that happens, I’m not gon’ give up on them.
Plus, even Queen Bey says “Who wants that perfect love story anyway?”
Let’s be real here, Bey and Jay are “down to ride till the very end”
Now, enough with the Beyoncé/Jay Z lyrical puns, Her OTR tour costumes are some of the most incredible and bad ass costumes that we’ve seen her in!
Designers like Vogue’s ‘The Fashion Fund’ winner of 2008 Alexander Wang, Project Runway’s Michael Costello, Givenchy, Vrettos Vrettakos, Diesel, and Versace have designed costumes specifically for Beyoncé for the tour, and they’re blowing us away!
September 3rd will be the night!
I will be seeing amazing designers and brands like Manning Cartel, LIFEwithBIRD, Khalo, Carly Hunter, Alice Mccall, Lui Hon, YB J’AMIE, Neo Dia, and finally, Willow.
Expect a lot of photos and a lot of excitement, because this will undoubtedly be the highlight of my life in the next few incredibly busy weeks!!!
A quick side note: I know my feed is becoming slower day by day, but my final year of VCE is demanding my full attention, but I will always try to post where possible!
One of the chicest skirts to ever grace the streets – Faux leather skirts!
The versatility with the simple, leather look skirt is incredible. This skirt can be anything that you want it to be. Elegant? check, Casual? check.
The faux leather skirt is the biggest staple in street style at the moment, for anyone and any style!
I want everyone to stop considering the leather skirt as a risk, and befriend the amazing piece, as there are styles and cuts to suit everyone, every shape, and every mood!
Here are some more examples of how you can style a leather skirt for various occasions! (Excuse the poses, i’m a writer and stylist, not a model!)
So I must admit, most of these products I have had before July/August but I have become absolutely hung up on these products, and have or will use them excessively, and recommend you do the same!
Let’s start with the basics which should become of your skin care regiment (if they aren’t already). I absolutely love the Formula 10.0.6 skin care range, and I use So Totally Clean Deep Pore Cleanser which is a 2-in-1 cleanser and toner, which doesn’t require any water. All you do is use makeup remover pads, a few drops and voila! Of course, I only use this when I feel very lazy or don’t have time to wash my face properly, but this definitely does the trick. It cleanses well and leaves my skin feeling clean and smooth.
Also from Formula 10.0.6, I use the Best Face Forward Daily Foaming Cleanser which uses passionfruit and green tea to keep my skin clean and oil free, while the green tea exfoliates!
But, I don’t just use these products alone. For Christmas in 2012, my mum bought me the Models Prefer Skin Cleanser, which is almost exactly like a Clarisonic Cleansing System, but is a quarter of the price! This system comes with four attachments: A soft bristled brush, a normal brush, a sponge applicator, and massage fingers. I found that the normal brush is too harsh on my skin, as I have very sensitive skin, but after cleansing with it, I feel like I have also taken away a layer of skin, which is actually a good thing. Normally though, I use the soft bristled brush because I don’t wear that much makeup (normally just foundation and concealer). The sponge applicator is good for moisturiser, but I don’t use it often because I noticed that it doesn’t apply the moisturiser in a way that makes it blend into my skin, but rather leaves a thin layer in certain areas which I then need to massage in by hand. As for the massage fingers, I find them a bit awkward to use, but they do feel relaxing! When my jaw feels tense from clenching (which I do often), I use the massage fingers to hover over the sore area (externally) and find that it does release tension, but unless you open your mouth and separate your teeth, you might feel a very discomforting vibration through your teeth! The system is battery powered, which is fine by me because the batteries last for a very long time! If you are considering purchasing a Clarisonic (which can range from $100-$250), I suggest you try the Models Prefer which you can purchase at Priceline or Target for $15, which basically does the exact same job, and even comes with more attachments with no extra cost!
Now, moving on to makeup tools!
One of my gorgeous friends bought me Real Techniques Core Collection Cosmetic Brushes, which automatically makes her my makeup guardian angel, because since then, my foundation, concealer and lipstick has been flawless***
The Detailer Brush is so perfect for applying lipstick without a liner or perfecting lip arches, but also for concealing problem areas with precision!
The Pointed Foundation Brush is my best friend. It literally applies any liquid foundation evenly and the point is perfectly angled to reach all areas of the face and neck!
Finally, I use the Buffing Brush solely for powder foundation, which I use to blend around my jaw line, chin and neck to ensure that my coverage is even and that I have no foundation lines!
What I noticed, however, is that sometimes I would be in a rush and would be unable to spend 10 or so minutes applying concealer and foundation with the brushes and taking all the precautions to make sure that everything was blended in properly, so, intrigued by the colour and desperate to buy a product from Mecca Maxima, I purchased the Kit Cosmetics Blender Sphere which has once again revolutionised my makeup routine, and I cannot urge you enough to join in on it’s impeccable and immaculate makeup blending powers!
The Kit Cosmetics Blender Sphere is the highly economic price of $14.99 and is literally one of the best cosmetic tools I have bought! The Blender Sphere speeds up the process of applying makeup while providing unblemished and accurate coverage. The sphere shape means that the slightly pointed ends can be used to reach smaller areas or places that require more detailed blending, while the middle of the sponge can be used to blend in the larger areas of the face.
Honestly, the Blender Sphere is a tool that I can’t imagine not using, and works so perfectly hand-in-hand with the Real Techniques cosmetic brushes!
This month, being August and 4 months away from the opening of Sephora in Sydney, Australia, I have decided that I will continue to use the best mascara I have ever purchased.
It was the Sephora Collection Full Action Extreme Effect Mascara in Ultra Black. This mascara is perfect. I am not even exaggerating. It lengthens, volumises, perfectly separates (I hate clumped eyelashes!), and curves your lashes without the need of an eyelash curler! Not only is the quality amazing, but it does wonders for your lashes! Before this mascara, I would apply an annoying amount of mascara repetitively to my lashes, which not only damaged them, but felt uncomfortable! With the Sephora Collection mascara, I found that I only need one or two layers before my lashes look great! What’s even better? It’s affordable!
It seems as though the Sephora Collection eye makeup products dominate above the other brands which Sephora sells, because I also love the Sephora Collection Long-lasting Eyeliner in 01 Noir Black. The precision I get with this liquid eyeliner is incredible! Before this eyeliner, I barely even bothered with liner because I already knew that it would take a miracle before I could perfect my liner, but with this product, I have been able to master the art of eyeliner multiple times thanks to the high precision ultra-fine bristle brush.
After all of that eye makeup, you’re going to need a good, gentle product that can remove the liner and mascara without tearing out lashes, creating ‘panda eyes’, or your average cleanser where you risk going red-eyed from accidentally opening your eyes to make sure you’ve removed everything before rinsing!
I use the Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover. I was given this product as a sample when I purchased the mascara and liner, and I wish I purchased a bottle bigger than 25ml! All you do is apply a few drops of the serum to a makeup remover pad and gently wipe your eyes. The serum not only removes makeup, but strengthens the lashes with it’s lash strengthening complex, which is perfect for people who wear contacts and others with sensitive eyes! The product is literally for everyone so try it!
Lip balm seems like an easy product to buy, but a quality balm is hard to come across! A few years ago I was on a very strong medication for my skin, where dry lips were a major side effect. It was so harsh that laughing was painful, and giving people a polite smile was out of the question. Out of desperation I used Vaseline but it was so impractical, especially when I was in class, the last thing I wanted to do was pull out a jar of Vaseline. My troubles came to end end when I discovered Maybelline Baby Lips.
I’m not sure what it is, but Baby Lips has continued to be my favourite lip balm that I have ever tried. At the generous price of $3.95, Baby Lips moisturises your lips almost instantly. First, a few minutes after application, you begin to shed the dry skin (if there is any), which then leaves you with smooth and cushioned lips that taste really, really nice! I just finished my favourite Menthol flavoured balm, and today replaced it with the Mango Pie flavour, which I hadn’t tried before, but am really liking! Since trying Maybelline Baby Lips I don’t think I can use any other balm!
Last year I won a competition, and included in the package was a voucher for a makeover with Gorgeous Cosmetics in Melbourne Central, which I redeemed and discovered the incredible lipsticks! A little short on money, I could only purchase one item that the lovely makeup artist used on me, but I am so happy I decided on the lipstick! The colour is a deep, dark red called Shiraz (M29), which is the perfect winter colour!
Anyone who knows me, knows that I absolutely love my two Chanel lipsticks for their quality and vibrance, but I can honestly and justly compare the quality of Gorgeous Cosmetics to the quality of Chanel! The lipstick is long lasting and remains vibrant, and I love the canister that it’s in! Yes, the Chanel quality is slightly better (which you would expect) but Gorgeous Cosmetics lipsticks are very close in standard for a little over half the price of a Chanel lipstick!
Finally, my 13th favourite beauty product of July/August is…
My M.A.C Cosmetics Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in ‘More To Love‘ This hot pink liner of perfectness is exactly as described: Long wearing. What I love about this lip pencil is that the quality is so good that if I wanted to, I could wear it without lipstick by lining then filling in my lips. The colour is bold and makes a statement on it’s own! It also brings back memories, as I purchased it in Dubai Airport on the way home from Italy! The crayon texture makes it glide on accurately and smoothly, while staying on without smudging!
It’s the perfect mediator when you don’t feel like wearing lipstick, but want a beautifully vibrant colour on your lips!
So that’s it! Those are my favourite beauty products of July/August which are gracing my makeup bag for the month!
