Sorry to say this to all of you who refuse to acknowledge Kanye West as a big time designer, but I’d like you to find a fashion house that has hundreds of people lining up outside a pop-up shop overnight, in 21 different countries, just to spend $125 (AUD) on a Gildan printed hoodie.
Annoyingly, I had this conversation in my ‘Online Digital Production’ class, because, whilst I was minding my own business, preparing my notes so I could start getting this article together, a guy peers over my shoulder and says “I couldn’t help but read your headline: I really hope you’re joking”. Mind you this same guy rocked up to class with pink jeans and black military boots the week before.
Whilst I’m not a confrontational person usually, I felt like I had to justify my opinions and inform this guy of some pretty interesting and solid facts; facts which he, like many people who don’t like Kanye, wouldn’t even know.
Success shouldn’t be measured by what a person says, but more so what they achieve. Since we’re using Kanye West as an example, let’s quickly mention that aside from his own career, he has helped so many other artists achieve success. We’re even talking about producing what was arguably Jay-Z‘s best album The Blueprint. First and foremost he was an acclaimed music producer who worked on albums for people like Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson, Ludacris, and so many more.
Now, he is one of the world’s best selling artists of all time, selling more than 32 million albums and 100 million digital downloads. With 7/7 top selling albums, a successful fashion line, and limited release collaborations with brands like ADIDAS, you have to admit that regardless of the criticism and controversy that usually follows Mr. West, he is a serious force to be reckoned with.
Lately, fashion forces around the world are criticising Kanye’s “disastrous” YEEZY SEASON FOUR runway show during NYFW 2016; models were falling, fainting, and throwing their shoes off in an attempt to combat the heat. You can read all about it here. However, the fact that Ye actually has an acclaimed, star studded, and sought out show to attend during NYFW is big. Let’s not forget to mention the controversial yet successful shows from YEEZY seasons one through three which was followed by hype all over the world.
You can stream the whole show here from Tidal. Although exclusive to Tidal members, you can watch the first minute free (how generous, Jay)
At the end of the day, Kanye’s controversies, critiques, and constant media attention does nothing more than fuel the hype, and you’re just going to have to deal with the fact Kanye is an undeniable and consistently growing force in the fashion industry, and that we love Kanye like Kanye Loves Kanye.
